Change is nothing new, but the pace and degree of change that businesses are facing today can make it difficult to keep everyone and everything moving ahead together.
Leaders can sometimes lose sight of the fact that the ‘purpose’ of change is, simply put, to deliver benefits to the organisation. These benefits will be aligned to the organisation’s strategic objectives.
A change process should therefore be ‘benefit-led’, with every action in the change focussed on delivering benefits.
Sometimes organisations decide that change is needed, before clearly outlining ‘why’ it is needed or ‘what’ needs to be achieved. I have even seen cases where the business rationale has been re-written half way through a change process, simply because insufficient focus was given to it at the outset.
The impact of failures to introduce effective change can also be high: loss of market position, removal of senior management, loss of stakeholder credibility, loss of key employees.
